Dear Vote Run Lead Community,
It hurts more than we thought it would. The news of Roe v. Wade being overturned, while expected, is a blow to women's full – and rightful – place in our country and a dangerous decision threatening other constitutional rights like same-sex marriage and access to contraception.
We are reminded that the America we seek to create, the democracy we can imagine, the future we all deserve has not yet arrived. We must build it, fight for it, and weather whatever stands in its way with bravery and in community.
With the decision by SCOTUS in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case, up to 26 states have indicated they will ban access to abortion, eliminating a key healthcare decision and control over their own bodies for millions of women, gender-nonconforming people and trans men in this country. These state laws are about cruelty and control. They target the poor and the vulnerable, and hurt our sisters of color more direly. We will fight back and lead. State by state. Every day.
We at Vote Run Lead, as individuals and as an organization, are taking the time to process this news. And we are ready to fight even harder. We know our mission to build an equitable democracy through the leadership of feminist, anti-racist and pro-democracy women is what – and who – we need to lead us into a better tomorrow. We know that erosion of voting rights, the strategic anti-LGBTQ laws, the devaluing of Black lives, the mis- and disinformation campaigns, and the dismantling of reproductive freedoms are all connected. We also know that we are the ones we’ve been waiting for.
