RUN/51 Minnesota: Why You Are The Leader We Need

Vote Run Lead and Land Stewardship Project are hosting a training for women in rural Minnesota who are contemplating or interested in running for public office. At this training, attendees will have the opportunity to learn how to write and deliver a compelling stump speech to jumpstart their campaigns.

The Center for Rural Policy and Development reports that in Minnesota, agriculture is the second largest industry in entirely rural counties (18.4%) and the fifth largest industry in counties with a town/rural mix (8%). According to the Women Food and Agriculture Network (WFAN) “women now own or co-own close to 50% of the farmland in the U.S.” Yet few women sit on water or conservation boards, growers’ associations or are represented in elected offices in these rural counties. Currently, only 16% of the Minnesota legislative seats are held by rural women.

The Land Stewardship Project works to foster an ethic of stewardship for farmland, to promote sustainable agriculture, and to develop sustainable communities. At the core of all their work is the values of stewardship, justice, and democracy. Vote Run Lead is fighting to create a more inclusive and reflective democracy and the organization is committed to unleashing the political power of women as voters, candidates, and leaders to create and sustain an equitable democracy. RUN/51 is Vote Run Lead’s newest initiative to move the Minnesota legislature to 51% women’s representation by 2024. It’s time to make the Minnesota legislature #herhouse!
