Mis- and disinformation are not new to the Census. But in today’s hyper-networked media ecosystem, it can travel faster and farther than ever before. With the 2020 count now in full swing, many of your constituents may be confused about what is true about the Census, what is false and what is intended to deceive. This Town Hall will cover the basics of mis- and disinformation, and offer a set of best practices you can follow to protect the Census from these threats.

Emma Margolin is a senior research analyst for Data & Society’s Disinformation Action Lab. Previously, she worked as a journalist at NBC News and MSNBC, where she reported on LGBTQ rights, elections, the courts, the far right, and numerous other topics for both on-air and digital platforms. Her work has also appeared in ThinkProgress, Glamour.com and Politico Magazine, among other publications. She is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the Harvard Kennedy School.
